Abstract

This thesis develops a physically constrained supervisory energy management system for a grid-connected residential net zero-energy building integrating photovoltaic generation, lithium-ion battery storage, grid exchange, and load-shifting operation. The proposed framework follows a HOMER–TRNSYS–MATLAB workflow, where HOMER is used for preliminary PV-battery sizing, TRNSYS represents the dynamic NZEB plant, and MATLAB implements the supervisory controllers through Type 155 co-simulation. In the primary case, a rule-based controller and an adaptive fuzzy logic controller are compared for battery dispatch and grid import/export management under the same battery protection limits. Results show that RBC reduces grid import more aggressively, but AFLC improves battery-aware operation by lowering throughput, RMS current, SOC excursion, and command roughness. In the extended case, a physically modeled heater–pump–tank shiftable thermal branch is integrated to utilize residual PV before export. The load-shifting extension improves PV self-consumption, reduces grid interaction, and maintains stable battery behavior, confirming the practicality of the AFLC-based supervisory EMS.
